AURORA, Colo. — (Tuesday, Feb. 18) – The Community College of Aurora was pleased to host Gov. Jared Polis on Tuesday for his remarks on important updates regarding state affairs. The presentation, hosted by the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, was attended by local and state government officials, business leaders, CCA representatives, and others, covering a range of significant topics from housing to transportation.
Following opening remarks from CCA President Dr. Mordecai Ian Brownlee, Gov. Polis outlined a list of his administration’s priorities in the near future that will impact not only Aurora but all of Colorado’s communities. Among his priorities were:
- Addressing Colorado’s cost of living: Gov. Polis spoke about his efforts to lower the cost of housing by breaking down artificial barriers to housing and cutting red tape, while also saving Coloradans money including by reducing healthcare costs and expanding access to and affordability of homeowner’s insurance and other living expenses.
- Improving public safety: Gov. Polis shared his vision of making Colorado one of the top 10 safest states in the country including with significant state backing to law enforcement, which is typically funded at the municipal and county levels.
- Expanding transit: Gov. Polis discussed improving transit across the Front Range with the Front Range Passenger Rail. He stated that legislation passed this year that will boost Colorado’s ranking for state investment in transit from 42nd in the nation to 23rd.
- Expanding Colorado’s employable skills: Tying directly into CCA’s mission of preparing learners for economic stability through workforce preparation and Colorado’s economic sustainability, Gov. Polis highlighted the success of the state’s educational programs that help prepare people for in-demand careers. Among the programs he discussed were Care Forward Colorado, which provides free training in important medical fields; Forestry programs that prepare firefighters to combat Colorado’s high fire danger; and the state’s initiative to make the first two years of college free for households making less than $90,000. These programs, the Governor said, are vital to building and strengthening Colorado’s workforce.
Chamber President and CEO Naomi Colwell followed the Governor with closing remarks, emphasizing the Chamber’s commitment to furthering Aurora’s business interests by maintaining a strong presence in the state’s legislative matters.
