Aurora, CO – Food security for the Community College of Aurora’s (CCA) students received a generous boost last week. Credit Union of Colorado sponsored Foxy’s Mobile Market on Jan. 29 for all three of CCA’s campuses, demonstrating commitment to the CCA community and promoting food security.

Access to basic needs like nutritious food is essential for students to thrive both inside and outside the classroom, said Phil Smith, President and CEO of Credit Union of Colorado. Foxy’s Mobile Market reflects a shared commitment to student wellness and success, and we’re proud to partner with Community College of Aurora to help remove barriers, strengthen financial and personal stability, and support students as they pursue their education and long-term goals.

The Community College of Aurora Foundation (CCAF) partnered with Credit Union of Colorado to secure the sponsorship. John Wolfkill, Executive Director of CCAF, thanked the credit union for its generosity: Credit Union of Colorado has been a catalytic partner in this work, Wolfkill said. Their support has helped move us from meeting individual emergencies to scaling a solution that meets students where they are. Credit Union of Colorado understands that financial stability, food security, and education are deeply connected.

CCA operates Foxy’s Mobile Market in partnership with SECORCares, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to food access and community well-being. On scheduled dates, SECORCares parks its mobile market truck in the CentreTech Campus parking lot, transforming the space into a pop-up grocery experience. One side of the truck opens to reveal shelves stocked with fresh produce, canned goods, and packaged groceries, while tables are set to welcome CCA students and employees to shop at no cost.

Support from community partners, including Credit Union of Colorado, helps make it possible for CCA to sustain this service and continue meeting the essential needs of its campus community.

Foxy’s Mobile Market serves an average of 232 shoppers each market day. Through data collected by CCA’s Office of Student Advocacy, the college tracks household size and food distribution impact, revealing that an average of 651 individuals benefit from the food provided each time SECORCares visits campus.

People at a food bank select items like bread and canned goods from a long table lined with bins. The mood is busy and collaborative.

Cold weather didn’t stop the market on Jan. 29, setting up inside the Student Center instead.

At CCA, we know academic success begins with students having their basic needs met. When our Basic Needs Assessment revealed that 64.1% of students were skipping meals or coming to class hungry due to cost, we created a range of initiatives to support food security, said Beau Green, CCA’s Executive Director of Student Advocacy. Foxy’s Mobile Market is a cornerstone initiative, serving the CCA community and their households, so students can focus on learning, building their skills, and preparing for the workforce. We’re deeply grateful to our community partners, whose support makes this work possible.

Foxy’s Mobile Market is one of several services and initiatives CCA offers to promote food security. Students, staff and faculty have access to a food party at the CentreTech Campus’ new Wellness Den. Foxy’s Resource Center at the Centennial Campus for Healthcare and First Responders and the Student Lounge at Lowry Studios include snack stations, ensuring students have access to food no matter which campus they attend.

These efforts earned CCA national and local recognition for promoting food security in recent years. The national non-profit Generation Hope awarded CCA the FamilyU Seal in 2024. The Colorado Department of Higher Education designated CCA a Hunger Free and Healthy Minds campus in 2023. The national Food Recovery Network awarded CCA a food recovery grant in 2025. Last year, CCA also became a campus partner in the Swipe Out Hunger movement.

Together, these initiatives reflect CCA’s holistic commitment to student well-being and removing basic needs barriers to academic success. Students and community members can learn more about available resources by visiting the Student Advocacy webpage or stopping by the Wellness Den, located in the Student Center at the CentreTech Campus, to connect with support services firsthand. Through intentional partnerships and campus-wide efforts, CCA continues to ensure that access to nutritious food and essential resources remains a cornerstone of student success.
