The Psychology of Change
|
Spring! |
 |
What a magnificent
time for change.
One of the joys of teaching is mentoring younger teachers.
Over my 25 years I've mentored (and been mentored by) many.
One of my mentoring treasures, however, is a colleague Dr. Peggy
Norwood (Dr. Peg). With degrees from Brown and Virginia U, she
is a clinical psychologist, a teacher and a mom. She does a television show
for the college; a radio show and online podcasts. Her newly
published book is on the psychology of change and is our focus
article this month. Click below for an excerpt from Dr. Peg's book.
I'm sure you will enjoy it and find it, dare I say
J
life changing!
Our secondary topic this month is Careers in Psychology. Ever
think you'd like to be a psychologist
or counselor ? It may not be as difficult as you think. True,
becoming a psychologist requires a PhD but many counseling
positions, teen pregnancy counselors, substance abuse counselors and
such, can be acquired with a four year bachelor's degree (and it's
almost never too late, I didn't complete my PhD until I was 55).
Local college courses and programs are linked below; and the Department of Labor link provides
information on: the nature of the work, education and training,
salaries and projected outlook for employment in the field. It's a
great place to begin if you think it might be time for a career change!
Happy spring and as always... good psychology to you! Dr. B.

Do
Something Different….For a
Change: An Insider’s Guide to What Your Therapist
Knows (But May Not Tell You)
By Peggy Mitchell Norwood, Ph.D.
[click
here to read and excerpt]
Have you
ever found yourself wishing things could be
different but you weren’t sure how to make
it happen? What if a psychologist with years
of clinical and teaching experience wrote a
book revealing secrets that therapists know
but usually don’t share? And what if this
book supplied the keys to producing lasting
change in life?
That is exactly what you get with Dr. Peg’s
new book, Do Something Different…For a
Change: An Insider’s Guide to What Your
Therapist Knows (But May Not Tell You).
Combining insights from her own experience
as a therapist with careful observations
from psychology, education, and religion,
this book compassionately communicates
fundamental principles to help you heal the
emotional pain and emptiness that keeps you
from changing.
This book
is for people who (1) are stuck in
self-defeating patterns of thinking,
feeling, and behaving, (2) have been in
therapy unsuccessfully and are frustrated,
or (3) have considered but never entered
therapy. The Surgeon General’s 1999 report
on mental health tells us that “ almost
everyone” has experienced distressing mental
health problems that affect their thinking,
mood, or behavior.
What
readers are saying about Do Something
Different… For a Change
“Do
Something Different… For a Change provides practical principles when it comes
to making a commitment to changing our lives
for the better.”
